Dane Jan Jonck recently got to grips with the new Tatuus-Cosworth at Silverstone as the 17-year-old evaluates a move into BRDC Formula 4 for 2016. Driving for Sean Walkinshaw Racing, Jonck described the new machine as “a really good car” as he racked up the laps in Northamptonshire.

“It’s a really good car compared to the German F4 car that I drove last year,” he said. “It has lots of downforce and especially at Silverstone, which is a high-speed track, through Maggots and Becketts it feels good. It is a good feeling going around and really pushing the car,” Jonck continued.

After a successful karting career in his native Scandinavia, Jonck stepped up to single-seaters in 2014 and finished as runner-up in the Danish Formula Ford Championship. For 2015, he moved across to competing in ADAC Formula 4 but endured a more difficult year. He is now focused on his plans for 2016 and believes that BRDC Formula 4 could be the place for him.

“It is a step up from the German F4 series and it will definitely help people as a stepping stone. It is a really good car to go into from an FIA F4 car as you can feel the power and speed difference, “said the Dane. After stepping from the car after the morning session, Jonck was keen to continuing pushing to gain as much knowledge as possible. He said: “You don’t notice the engine power that much but you definitely notice the aero. The first five laps I was getting used to it in the quick corners then the last five laps I was taking them flat.”

Another big draw for young drivers according to Jonck is the number of legendary and demanding circuits that BRDC Formula 4 will visit in 2016. “There are a lot of small tracks in Germany which you don’t know until you get there but all the English tracks you already know. This is the first time on a British track for me but I know the layout from my head. You know them from watching the series and the familiarity comes because they are legendary tracks,” he said.
