Talented young Danish single-seater racer Jan Jonck will graduate into the BRDC Formula 4 Championship with top team SWR this season, it is announced today, for his first year of competition on UK soil.
Joining South Africa’s Eugene Denyssen at the race-winning Chipping Norton squad, 17-year-old Jonck arrives for his maiden campaign in the hugely competitive category relishing the prospect of racing the latest 230bhp Tatuus-Cosworth car.
Last year, the youngster from Skodstrup competed in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship in Germany and, prior to that, finished as Vice-Champion in Formula Ford Denmark with seven wins and a total of 15 podiums from 21 races contested. Jonck also achieved two pole positions and set fastest race lap on four occasions.
“I’m really looking forward to racing in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship this year”, said the Dane, “The car is really fast with the great aerodynamics and amazing power from the Cosworth engine, it’s a joy to drive.
“I think this will be a great stepping stone and learning experience for me, and I’m sure we will be competitive. But the learning is curve is big so, for now, it’s heads down so we can make as much progress as possible before the first race weekend at Snetterton.”
Before making the move into single-seater car racing two years ago, Jonck achieved considerable success in karting and the 2012 season was the undoubted highlight. Winning the Junior Rotax Max Challenge Denmark crown, he also doubled-up with a similarly impressive title victory in the Junior Rotax Nordic Championship.
Sean Walkinshaw, eponymous team owner of SWR, is very happy to have secured Jonck’s signature for the new BRDC F4 season – the first full campaign which will feature the new Tatuus-Cosworth F4-016 car – and is certain the teenager will make big strides during the campaign.
“We’re really pleased Jan is joining Eugene in the team this year, he’s a young driver with a lot of potential and has obviously achieved some good results in Formula Ford”, said Walkinshaw, “The step up from ADAC Formula 4 into BRDC F4 is a notable one, we’ve got more power and much more grip with the BRDC car, but we’re sure Jan is going to make significant progress during the season.”
Snetterton 300 Circuit in Norfolk will host the opening event of the 2016 BRDC Formula 4 Championship season on Easter Sunday, 27th March, and Easter Monday, 28th March.
